How to choose the right grammage for your labels

Paper grammage is one of the features that most differentiates the products available in the market. It is defined as the mass per unit area and is expressed as grams per square metre. To give an idea, the classic A4 copy paper usually has a grammage of 75 gr, card stock paper is around 90 gr and cardboards can even reach 350 grams per square metre.

However, you shouldn’t mistake grammage with thickness: a greater or lesser content of wood fibres can indeed affect paper weight. This way, two sheets with the same thickness may have a different grammage. Furthermore, some finishing may also affect this feature.

Paper grammage choice may be considered an issue of a minor importance. However, it is crucial to dedicate it the right attention: a paper that is too light may appear transparent and therefore will not give your graphic design the proper prominence. On the contrary, a paper too thick may create wrinkles or other anaesthetics flaws, especially with particular materials.

The ideal grammage for sticker paper

Grammage for sticker paper has to be chosen taking into consideration two main factors: the type of support where the label will be applied and the effect that has to be obtained with regard to the target of the final product and its market positioning.
Felt marked and cotton natural paper are amongst the heaviest on the catalogue: they will surely give a premium and elegant touch to your product. These papers are the perfect solution if you want to create labels for high quality wines or liquors or if you want to enhance the preciousness of your product. However, their application may result difficult on support with a really small or curved surfaces, like a bottleneck.
If you are looking for a lighter grammage, coated paper fits you better. Smoother and easier to work, it offers great print opportunities, a greater clarity and high text readability. A lighter paper grammage is therefore the best one to give a glamour and modern touch to your product or when texts and elaborated design are present. This paper also offers the opportunity to be applied on smaller surfaces with particular shapes.

Finally, those looking for a sticker paper with extra-thin grammage may choose a plastic material. Polypropylene indeed allows to reach a grammage of 44 gr/m2 - that is physically impossible for classic paper. Plastic materials give products a “no label”, minimal and essential style and are particularly suitable for cosmetics or in case of particular formats.
